Brendan Clegg:

I thought the lineup looked quite promising and I think that was reflected by the positive opening 20.

We had a go, played on the front foot and got bodies forward. It was good to see MJ really going at people instead of taking the safe option and we looked pretty good.

Grant earned his luck with the first - no problem at all with players in the box getting a shot off.

The second was just Maja showing again that we don’t have to score the perfect goal with him in the team… if you put the ball in the box he’ll get on the end of things.

The rest of the first half was much about us sitting back and Hull having a go although we probably should have scored again on the counter.

They scored a goal that was pretty unstoppable as we allowed balls into our box… winning a header that went top bins, and then we saw the half out.

2nd half we were poor and, although Carlos is wrapping him in cotton wool understandably, I thought Maja coming off so early was gamble and the ball simply didn’t stick from there.

We were dominated for most of the half, couldn’t string passes together and when the breaks were on we were panicked and rushed. Hull missed a huge chance and then we just about defended our box well enough to hold on.

A vital win and for pure effort alone the players deserved it after the short turn around. You have to say that despite not winning in our previously undefeated 6 games, it wasn’t through lack of effort or fight.

Overall we were really no better or worse than we have been but we found a way to win and certainly for that opening period we went looking for it with intent. Something to build on.

  • Palmer - 6 but kicking accuracy quite poor
  • Furlong- 7 maybe not great on the ball but defends the back post for his life
  • Holgate - 6 slight improvement each game
  • Heggem - 7 another game giving it absolutely everything
  • Styles - 7 Not the biggest and sometimes is cheap with it but another who is giving absolutely all he has
  • Mowatt - 5 looked leggy
  • Molumby - 6 got about, showed energy
  • Fellows - 6 a bit more direct but still looks subdued
  • MJ - 6 bright start but faded, looked more like it though
  • Grant - 6 Giving it all he has, using pace well
  • Maja - 6 Another goalscorer’s goal and decent overall
  • Grady - 5 too weak too often
  • Dobbin - 6 hit and miss, he’s hit something, feels like he needed another season in league 1 but improving
  • Racic - 5 Did a job
  • Wallace - 5 Chased it but did little with it
  • Diakite- 5 got stuck in and covered stuff

Ancient Baggie:

At the end of the day it's a win and I'm delighted with that but I found it a bit of a worrying performance against a very average Hull side. Great start, players running at the opposition, playing balls forward into space behind the defenders top stuff. Two up, should have been three and then we seemed to stop playing. Perhaps Hull upped their game but we fell back and when we got possession started to look negative. Their goal was a decent finish but 2 players made no effort to close down the cross.

Second half was a nervous affair and we rode our luck a bit at times but saw it out. Corberan made a number of changes some of which I have to say looked a bit panicked but he referred afterwards to the fatigue in the team.

We definitely need some players back but that looks a way off. Positives for me were the performances of Heggem and Styles in particular and it was good to see glimpses of what Johnston can bring.

We've been in a tough period but we're still in the mix. COYB
