Brendan Clegg:

Another solid win against a Plymouth side who impressed me. They kept the ball well and had a couple of useful players, but in the end I think we earned the result.

Racic coming in for Molumby was unusual in that it was likely to improve our quality, but it was another test for a side built or consistency and being drilled.

I thought we started quickly and pinned Plymouth back well, created good situations and hit the post through Grant as well as some other near misses.

There were also a couple of nearly moments where I thought Racic played the right pass but was on a different wavelength to his teammates - one genius inside pass to Fellows in particular stood at, as Fellows stood still expecting it to feet. It will come with games I’m sure.

Plymouth survived that and got a hold of the game and got a couple of chances through our sloppy play and we needed Palmer to stand strong.

We finished the half on top with Swift and Mowatt hitting the post from range and you felt like we just needed to keep going.

After the break though it was a slow start with neither team really creating anything. We looked a little bit tired and short on ideas and Corberan was rightly readying the subs when Mowatt took control of the ball in the middle and calmly carried it out of congestion and into the right channel, clever play between him, Furlong and Racic freed the latter out wide and he hammered a perfect cross between defenders and keeper for Maja to sweep home.

I think it was another lovely, clever, team worked goal, and it set us up for the victory.

The subs came on and I thought they all looked pumped and determined to get the result, and I felt it more likely we’d get a second than Plymouth would equalise.

Job done. Not as fluid as previous games but the hard work and discipline was there, and it was enough to beat a team who look decent. I do think we missed Molumby’s energy and bite but Racic was key in winning the game. Nice challenges for Carlos to have.

  • Palmer - 7 Quiet game but big saves when needed.
  • Furlong - 7 So consistent again. Solid.
  • Barts - 6 An error nearly cost us but good overall.
  • Ajayi - 7 A couple of poor passes but his pace was an asset once more.
  • Heggem - 7 Looked like he might have a knock but got stronger as it went on.
  • Mowatt - 7 Ran the game again.
  • Racic - 7 Did tire but the quality is there and will get stronger.
  • Fellows - 6 A good battle with their decent fullback.
  • Swift - 7 Involved. Battled well. Didn’t always make the right choice.
  • Grant - 6 Started really well and continued to graft but went quiet.
  • Maja - 7 So many deft touches and bits of clever play, and a goalscorers goal.
  • Grady - 7 won tackles and made clever passes.
  • Johnston - 7 lively but over-excited.
  • Jed - 7 top effort and application, fought for everything.
  • Diakite - 7 Neat and tidy.
  • Dobbin - 6 Made a couple of poor choices but worked hard.
