Phillips signs for Blues

09 July 2008

Striker Kevin Phillips has ended months of speculation about his future by signing a two year contract with Birmingham City. Although the deal tabled by Albion obviously guaranteed him one year of Premiership football, the second year was conditional on him making at least 19 first team appearances. Tony Mowbray took the view that although the Club had made him a "very substantial financial offer" for the next two years, the second year had to be earned.

Phillips leaves Albion with an impressive record of 46 goals in 81 appearances, with 24 of those coming last season. Injuries permitting, it's hard to see him fail to reproduce a significant chunk of that form for Blues next season. Whether he would have managed to do it in the Premiership for us is something we'll never know.
