Brendan Clegg:

A performance that was well below par from quite a few players.

I thought Brentford were good - very effective and some talented players. They played a very high line to press us, played 4-4-2 but with a 2nd striker who dropped off to play in holes we didn’t cover well enough but also block off the easy pass to Sawyers.

Their keeper also played very high - on corners he was on the halfway line with every Brentford player in or on the edge of our box. I was amazed we didn’t leave Edwards up to counter this but it was the same all game.

For the first 30 minutes I thought we were really poor, didn’t win a second ball, didn’t press well enough and didn’t use it well enough when we did get it. Only HRK and Edwards really gave it a go but too many others were sloppy, passive or showed way too little urgency. We could probably have been a couple down with better finishing.

Towards the end of the half Pereira managed to get into the game more and just as we’d got on top we conceded a goal from a corner.

Somewhat fortunately we equalised a couple of minutes later with an almost identical goal to theirs, a near post header from a corner and we shaded the rest of the first half.

The second half was 50/50 but we created the better chances - Edwards and Phillips could’ve done better with chances and at the death Austin scored but it was ruled offside.

The injury to Bartley didn’t help us although young O’Shea did well. The other subs were understandable but we were seriously lacking in pace with the options. Do we really need Brunt and Barry on the bench together? In future I think this shows we need Willock or Tulloch as, although we got control of the game in the final quarter all we could do was keep working it until we could engineer an opening for Furlong to run and cross.

Frustrating game but another point and another game undefeated against an impressive Brentford team - take it and move on.

  • SJ - 6 Generally okay but some poor kicks.
  • Furlong - 7 Extra for the ground he covered and the goal but he did make some errors.
  • Semi - 6 Also made a few errors but recovered well a number of times.
  • Bartley - 6 Lost the ball a couple of times when he shouldn’t have been given it. Tried to play on but was obviously struggling.
  • Ferguson - 6 Some good moments again but some really cocky errors creeping into his game. Needs to sharpen up quickly.
  • Livermore - 6 Tried to get about they played around him and he was often pressing on his own.
  • Sawyers - 5 Really disappointing. Some good passes but didn’t win a 50:50 and was often so square that he was easy to take out of the game. Didn’t show enough desire and isn’t interested in challenging for the ball in the air.
  • Phillips - 5 Did threaten once or twice. Has been able to get away with stepping off it this season because his bursts are too good for most but not today.
  • Pereira - 7 Not everything came off but some sumptuous moments and he set up our best chances.
  • Edwards - 7 Another promising game. Should probably have scored but used his pace well and created things too.
  • HRK - 7 I thought the supply into him was poor but he held it up well. Brentford kept their high line knowing he was never going to run away from them.
  • O’Shea - 6 Solid debut, a couple of important challenges, didn’t let us down.
  • Austin - 6 Unlucky with the offside goal, supply wasn’t great otherwise.
  • Krov - 6 Neat and tidy but never threatened them.
