It's been five years since Jeremy Peace stated that West Bromwich Albion were a Championship club over-achieving in the Premier. True as that may have been, I thought it was tempting fate to say it. Even though the season is not over, I think we can say that we have solidified our status as a Championship club and nothing more. We may well get lucky and scrape through the play-offs, but I am struggling to see the plan.

The team is made up of players on loan who won't return, players too old to compete in the championship, a handful of decent players who won't stick around if we don't get promoted and a few really good young guns woefully short of game time. Add to this the piss-poor silence on the status of our coach. (Probably fired already after the Millwall result - Bring on 'A Lard Arse').

Peace had a plan he was often criticized for, which was based on fiscal responsibility, shrewd recruitment and in-house development. Our youth teams have performed minor miracles against rich clubs, with some players attracting the attention of the likes of Barcelona, yet there is no firm stance by management on our efforts to keep these players together, nor any consistency by the coaches to keep players like Harper and Edwards in the team even when they out-perform the old stagers.

If we end up in the Championship for another season, I would be quite happy to see us sacrificing a few years in order to develop our exciting young talent, assuming we can keep them (but to keep them we need to play them!!!).
